Does My Son Need Braces?
Braces are a form of orthodontic treatment, which helps to improve smiles by gradually shifting the teeth. Many kids may receive braces for a number of reasons, including crooked teeth, overbite, underbite, overcrowding of the teeth, or a “malocclusion” (a misaligned jaw). No matter the reasoning for getting braces, they are known to be very effective for patients of all ages!
Scheduling A Visit With the Orthodontist:
In order to determine if your son or daughter will need braces, it is important to receive an initial evaluation at the orthodontist. It is possible that your son’s regular dentist has recommended an orthodontic evaluation and may have given you a referral. On the other hand, if you are concerned with your son’s teeth and think hey may need braces it would be best to have an orthodontic visit scheduled.
Once the initial orthodontic visit is scheduled, the orthodontist will evaluate your child’s teeth, mouth and jaw. The orthodontist may ask your child certain questions if they have trouble biting their teeth together or if they have issues chewing, swallowing, or have ever heard any “clicking” or “popping” of the jaw. In some cases, an “impression” may be taken of the mouth to serve as a model replica of your child’s teeth to best help the orthodontist decide what treatment may be the most beneficial for your child. If the orthodontist notices any issues or areas of concern, treatment (like braces) may be needed effective immediately or somewhere in the near future.
If the Orthodontist Recommends Braces:
In the event that braces are needed for your son, you should know that kids commonly receive traditional braces, which come with the metal brackets, wires and rubber bands. The brackets attach to the teeth and are connected by a wire that is tightened gradually over time to ensure the gradual tooth movements. In some cases, individuals receive ceramic (clear) braces or clear removable braces called aligners if treatment permits. Depending on what your orthodontist recommends to you for your treatment certain options may be limited.
