Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu safe for My Kids?

Martial arts have become popular nowadays around children. Now, your kids can apply to many martial arts classes without any age restriction. It is a fun and healthy activities to develop your kids’ physical body endurance and strength as well as mobility so that their body will stay healthy and fit. But with so many martial arts out there to offer, we can’t leave out a traditional martial art called Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu itself is a martial art from Japan that use the method of close combat to defeat an opponent which one can use a weapon or none at all. On the hand Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is quite similar, only with the addition of some techniques that are focusing on grappling on the floor and the new feature of no striking. In the U.S itself, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is quite popular but is this martial safe for kids? The question will be answered below.

At what age can you start Jiu Jitsu?

Many parents are often asking themselves whether applying their kids early to learn martial arts is allowed and safe. Especially when it comes to a contact and aggressive sport such as Jiu Jitsu, it might worry you a lot. Some might think that the early contact you can have with martial arts, the better your kids will do physically, but in reality, there are still things you need to consider.

Technically, you can enroll your kids to learn martial arts from the age of 3, but some people think that the earliest you learn it, the fastest you will stop learning it. For an instance, an article from TatameMagezine, a Portuguese media have stated in one of their featuring article with the black belt world and American champion, Yuri Simões had said that even though he had a huge interest to learn Jiu Jitsu and how supportive his parents for him, they didn’t enroll him in any classes of Jiu Jitsu until he was 9 years old. The reason was because they were afraid they Yuri would lose interest too quickly if he was enrolled too early.

Another case to consider is how competitive Jiu Jitsu is. In a martial art competition such as Jiu Jitsu, the competition is quite stressful since it’s pretty much highly praised by the media. This kind of competition might trigger parents to pressure their children too much and forcing them to engage in the arena too early when their mental and their maturity are not ready to face the pressures at all. It might cause the exhaustion, losing their passion too early in the sport, and even make them resent and loath the sport.

So what is the right age to apply them then? Like how it was stated before, any age is actually fine as long as you consider about their psychology condition. If you only applying them for classes, I think it would be find to start early. But if you want to apply your kid to be a professional Jiu Jitsu athlete in the future, it might better to apply them around the age of 8-10 because at that age, they are more mature emotionally and have a better control of their aggressiveness. They will be easier to accept the pressures and will compete with passion instead of the needs to achieve some particular expectation.

Why Jiu Jitsu is important?

Why Jiu Jitsu is important

In an era where kids are likely spend their time in home instead of going out, busying themselves with a game console, pc, tablets, and mobile phones, the benefits of learning martial arts and being active physically as well as making new friends and socializing have never been so clear as in the term of benefits.

Jiu Jitsu as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a very amazing way for children to learn how to make new friends, to make their body fit, and what more is to have fun in a healthy way. But if I need to give you more reason of why learning Jiu Jitsu is important, one of that is probably for its nature of discipline. We all know that every martial arts always have a teaching of discipline. In order to learn all those techniques in Jiu Jitsu you need to have a continual habit, attention and respect to other Jiu Jitsu disciples that needs to be developed by practicing. It is not a short journey and requires a lot of discipline and self wants to fulfill this.

The second thing is self-defense to build their confidence. Self-defense is important to anyone since we need to know on how to protect ourselves from danger. Not all places are safe and we can’t always depend on people to protect ourselves. That’s why learning martial arts like Jiu Jitsu is important. A person who has a skill to protect themselves will be more confident to go anywhere independently and by any means, it will teach them self-respect and self-love to protect themself or anyone they love better.

The third reason is socializing. By applying your kids to a dojo or a martial arts class, they will meet new people and get new friends. It will improve their communication skill as well as their understanding on how to deal with different people outside their comfortable zone.

The fourth reason of course is to improve their body and health. By learning martial art such as Jiu Jitsu, their body will be well fitted, fresh and have a better body awareness and coordination than the people who don’t. That’s why learning martial arts, in this case Jiu Jitsu, is important to learn by any kids or even adult.
